The historically close friendship between the Unites States and Great Britain is often described as a “special relationship”. During visits to Camp David and Chequers this year, both the U.S. President George W. Bush and the Prime Minister Tony Blair spoke of the enduring special relationship between the two nations. But the special relationship is undergoing fundamental changes. With the end of the Cold War, the security imperatives which bound the U.S. firmly to Europe have weakened, rendering the future of the transatlantic alliance uncertain.

At the same time opportunities are emerging for co-operation in new dimensions outside the security sphere. In light of this, what are the prospects for the special relationship in the 21st century? What are the new issues shaping the contemporary Anglo-American special relationship? A panel of speakers will present their understanding of what the special relationship means today, and their vision of what it might look like in the future. Distinguished guest speakers include:

The Rt. Hon. Geoff Hoon MP, U.K. - Secretary of State for Defence
Morton Dworken - Minister Counselor for Political Affairs, U.S. Embassy
James R. Hagerty, London Bureau Chief, The Wall Street Journal. Prof. Anthony King, University of Essex.
A reception will follow the panel discussion and audience Q & A session.
