We
are delighted to invite our members to a special evening at Covent Garden,
to see The Royal Ballets new seasons Ballet which opens on a note
of high wit and vivacity with Rudolf Nureyevs joyous action-packed
version of Don Quixote.
Created for the Vienna State Opera Ballet in 1966 and crammed with comic
detail, this delightful production never before danced by the Royal
Ballet is loosely based on the ballet by Marius Petipa. Nureyev
brings the stamp of his own theatricality by using John Lanchberys
arrangement of Minkuss music and jettisoning the succession of folk
dances to focus on one aspect of Cervantess legendary tale.
The story belongs to Kitri, the adventurous peasant girl who runs off
to a gypsy encampment with her sweetheart, the local barber Basilio, rather
than follow her fathers wish that she marry the outrageous, ludicrously
silly fop Gamache, who just happens to be a wealthy nobleman. After romantic
and comedy complications, including a splendid sword-fight, tilting at
a windmill and a moonlit pas de deux, the chivalrous Don Quixote resourcefully
ensures a happy ending.
Join members of the SCGB for this performance which will include drinks,
canapés & sandwiches at the interval. (Seating with will be
prime stall seats).
Please send your reservations in early, as our ballet events are very
popular!
