Within the boundaries of London there are several country houses of great historical and architectural interest, some of them containing superb works of art. This talk, hosted by Dr. Geoffrey Tyack, Director, Stanford Programme in Oxford, will look at the art and architecture of some of these houses, notably Ham House, Syon House, Osterley Park, Marble Hill, Chiswick House and finally Kenwood, an eighteenth-century house on the edge of Hampstead Heath, situated in a sumptuous setting. The house, is an elegant 18th century neo-classical villa with interiors by Robert Adam. It has a world famous art collection, set against a backdrop of outstanding rooms, the renowned Iveagh Bequest features masterpieces such as Portrait of the Artist by Rembrandt, Guitar Player by Vermeer and many famous works by Old Masters and 18th Century artists. Outside, explore the meandering pathways, woodland and lake in an estate where you will find sculptures by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Light Refreshments will be served after the lecture, followed by a tour of Kenwood House. |
