To
enhance the Christmas spirit, we are pleased to announce a Champagne and
Wine Tasting event hosted by Layton’s Wine Merchants.
The theme of the tasting will be sparkling wines from around the world,
with particular reference to Champagne.
Champagne is, of course, the carefully defined region of Northern France,
90 miles east of Paris, whose sparkling wines carry the name of the region.
Any sparkling wines produced outside this region or appellation, cannot
be called Champagne, whether made just outside the region or Australia!
In the past a sparkling wine would normally be associated with cheap and
cheerful products, but sparkling also covers the top Fizz from around
the world. Often these wines are made with the same grape varieties as
in Champagne, exactly the same methods but the one thing that will differ,
is the ‘terroir’‚ which shapes the style and taste of the wine.
During the evening our guests will taste some top vintage Champagne and
non-vintage, some well-known houses, some very small, looking at the difference
between vintage and non-vintage, why some houses produce such different
styles to others and how Champagne is made and from what grape varieties.
We then look at a top sparkler from Australia, actually made by Moet,
a delicious New Zealand sparkler and pay homage to Spain and Italy, to
contrast the styles of wines produced there. Finally there is a blind
wine for you to identify with a bottle of Champagne to the nearest correct
answer!
