Saturday, May 7, 2005
The Oxford walking tour on 7 May attracted some 20 members (one coming from as far away as Blackpool!) - and an equal number of current Stanford students. Sandwiched between a sumptuous luncheon buffet in the garden of Stanford House and high tea, members went on what must be the ultimate insider's walking tour of many of Oxford University's sites. Geoffrey Tyack, Director of the Stanford University Programme in Oxford since its start in 1984, imparted his unrivalled expertise of Oxford history and architecture, particularly during the visits to Merton College, one of the three oldest colleges at Oxford (founded in 1264) and the confusingly called New College, which actually dates back to 1379. The weather was very obliging (in the sense that the downpour occurred during high tea at Stanford House), as was Oxford University: we witnessed a rehearsal of Mozart's Requiem in Merton College Chapel and commencement celebrations at the Ashmolian Theatre. Members unfortunate enough having to wait at Oxford train station for the fast train back to Paddington were also treated to the sight of a special service of the Orient Express. A big thanks to Geoffrey, Stephanie and all the students for making the day very special. |
