The GSB’s ever popular Professor Jeff Pfeffer is visiting London and has kindly
offered to speak to our club again about his new book with Bob Sutton.
Many organizations decide what to do based on the past experience of senior leaders, ideology and belief, and by looking at what other companies are doing. None of these represent effective ways of making decisions. Meanwhile, companies have ignored massive amounts of evidence that speak to questions such as the effectiveness of stock options and incentive compensation, whether "winning the war for talent" is possible or even desirable, the effects of setting up internal competitive dynamics, and many other questions that are relevant to understanding management strategies and their effects. The fact that knowledge of "what works" is so infrequently used provides an opportunity for information arbitrage in the management of companies that is similar to arbitrage opportunities in the financial markets, except the returns are both larger and less likely to be immediately imitated away. Companies need to use more "evidence-based management" and a thought process that uncovers hidden assumptions and confronts them with what leaders know to be true. Jeff is the Thomas D. Dee II Professor of Organizational Behaviour in the GSB where he has taught since 1979. He is the author or co-author of ten books and has also published more than 100 articles and book chapters. Jeff has served on the faculties of the business schools at the University of Illinois and the University of California at Berkeley. He currently serves on the board of directors of four companies and also writes a monthly column for Business 2.0 entitled "The Human Factor." Dr. Pfeffer is a member and Fellow of the Academy of Management and a member of the Industrial Relations Research Association. He has won the Richard D. Irwin award for Scholarly Contributions to Management as well as several awards for books and articles. He received his B.S. in Administration and Management Science and his M.S. in Industrial Administration from Carnegie-Mellon University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Business Administration from the Stanford GSB.
