Event Review
Professor Tom Byers - Enduring success factors of tech entrepreneurship
back to Events
Thursday 10th November

On the evening of 10 November 2005, some 30 SCGB members and guests assembled at the East India Club to attend a presentation by Tom Byers, founder and faculty director of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP), which serves as the entrepreneurship centre for the engineering school. After some refreshments, Tom proceeded to share with us his top ten enduring success factors for high-technology entrepreneurship, some of them learnt by painful experience before Tom became an academic. As befits the title, his high-tech presentation included video clips from successful venture capitalists and technical innovators. The presentation is available from http://www.stanford.edu/dept/MSandE/people/faculty/byers/resume.html. Tom managed to turn the presentation into a small classroom, engaging in a dialogue with business students, venture capitalists and everyone else in the audience. Just like in a small class, he even occasionally called on people. In summary, this was not only a truly insightful talk, but also a most entertaining one.
