In the centenary year of the birth of Michael Tippett and 50 years after its world premiere at the Royal Opera House, The Midsummer Marriage returns in Graham Vick's acclaimed production from 1996 under the baton of Richard Hickox, the leading exponent of British repertory. The Midsummer Marriage is considered by many to be Tippett's finest opera, showing him at his most expansive and lyrical. Comic and mythic themes collide as the battle of the sexes is played out in real and symbolic form. There is the soaring music of lovers Jenifer and Mark (Amanda Roocroft and Will Hartmann), and the powerful oracular revelations of Sosostris (Elena Manistina in her Royal Opera debut). We see the downfall of the self-serving King Fisher (John Tomlinson returning to the role), while Jack (Gordon Gietz) discovers his destiny with Bella (Inger Dam-Jensen). With its evocative choruses and well-known 'Ritual Dances', these performances celebrate not only Tippett, but life and love. BOOKING Price - £74. (includes "prime seat" and light buffet with wine). You can book directly online (below) OR pay by cheque, Stanford Club of GB, 2 Old Brompton Road, PO Box 87, London SW7 3DQ. ONLINE PAYMENT: |
