Join us at the Royal Opera House for our annual opera event. As well as prime seats, we have a limited number of tickets (no charge) for a pre-performance talk before curtain-up. At the interval all guests will meet up, in a reserved area in the Floral Hall for of wine and canapes.
When Handel's opera was first performed in 1733, it was described as a story of how 'Love insinuates itself into the Hearts of Persons of all Ranks'. Our hero Orlando (the Roland of medieval legend) sets out to gain military glory but instead is sent mad by love for Angelica. Although rebuked for giving in to his romantic urges by the sorcerer Zoroastro, Orlando nonetheless decides that love can bring its own glory, and to that end he pursues Angelica. But she has fallen for Medoro, and he with her - which is not good news for Angelica's rival, the shepherdess Dorinda. The untangling of these conflicting passions through threats, magic, deceit and revelations inspired Handel to some of his most original operatic work - and some of the finest of all 18th-century opera. There is a special appeal to this first revival of Francisco Negrin's elegant production for The Royal Opera: Charles Mackerras conducts The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Bejun Mehta returns to the title role that won him an Olivier Award nomination in 2003.
