The Stanford University Chamber Chorale, a select ensemble of 24 singers under the direction of
Stephen M. Sano, will undertake a concert tour of England in June 2007. The Chorale departs
Stanford on 18 June and will present concerts at the Chapter House of Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln
(Wednesday, 20 June, 13:10); the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire (Thursday, 21
June, 13:10); Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge (Saturday, 23 June, 19:00); Romsey Abbey,
Hampshire (Evensong at 18:30); Saint James Church, Piccadilly, London (Wednesday, 27 June,
19:30); Leonard Stanley Priory, Gloucestershire (Thursday, 28 June, 19:30); and St. Mary
Redcliffe, Bristol (Friday, 29 June, 20:00).
In addition to paying tribute to British choral art with works by Harris, Howells, Vaughan Williams and MacMillan, the program includes North American choral repertoire featuring works by Eleanor Daley, René Clausen, Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen, and Howard Helvey. These composers represent the state of the choral compositional art in North America, and their music resonates broadly and deeply with audiences around the world. The concert at Trinity College, Cambridge will be a collaborative venture with the Trinity College Choir and their director Stephen Layton, and the concert at St. Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, will be a collaborative venture with the Exultate Singers and their director David Ogden. The Exultate Singers collaboration will feature Thomas Tallis’ 40-part motet Spem in alium nunquam habui. Stephen Sano, director of the Chamber Chorale, comments, “Our tours to the UK have grown out of my passion for the British choral tradition - the tradition in which I was raised, which has been nourished by the sharing community of musicians in Britain with whom I’ve had the good fortune to associate. This opportunity allows the entire Chorale not only to share their talents as a performing ensemble, but to learn about and experience their choral roots in a way that is impossible in the States.” A master class with leading British choral conductor Richard Marlow will be among the study highlights for the students in the Chorale.
