How it all began, the Heralds in Modern Times and Tracing your Family Tree are topics which the College of Arms cover. You will be given a tour of the building, erected in the 1670s and one of the few listed buildings remaining in this part of London. Heralds were first mentioned in Western Europe about the time of the first crusade, and from the late 12th Century they were attached to the households of rulers and magnates. they acted as messengers, diplomats and army staff officers, this last duty duty requiring them to become expert in identifying army commanders from their banners, shields and surcoats. Heralds also organised tournaments and gradually became expert not only only in coats of arms but also in ceremonial matters, which led to their organising the great ceremonies of state.

There will be wine and supper during the evening. Please book early! Limited spaces.
