Saturday 10 October 2009
Oxford Tour 2009Stanford in Great Britain alumni enjoyed a fine October day at Stanford in Oxford. Luncheon was served in the garden of Stanford House and was an exceptional buffet prepared by Stephanie Williams. Geoffrey Tyack, Director of the Stanford in Oxford programme, invited alumni to meet incoming Stanford students and faculty. Special guests were a group of Oxford students who recently returned from Palo Alto after attending SOCO -- the innovative three-week Sophomore College on the Stanford campus held each Fall Term. Dr Tyack initiated a scholarship programme to enable Oxford students to participate in SOCO.Following lunch, the alumni were taken on a guided tour of historical Oxford by Geoffrey Tyack, author of Oxford, an architectural guide. Starting along a lane near the Stanford House where a section of the medieval city wall is still intact, past the oldest church, through the courtyard of the Bodleian to the medieval Divinity School and early University examination room, following that, the Wren designed Sheldonian Theatre and up the stairs of the Sheldonian for a panoramic view of Oxford, before going to New College ('new' in the 14th century) for a visit to the quadrangle, Great Hall, and chapel and cloisters. In the back garden of New College another section of the medieval city wall is carefully maintained in a landscaped setting. A fascinating tour of rich architectural interest. | |
