We are delighted to welcome Professor Stephen Stedman, who has agreed to speak to our members and guests during his stay in London. The title of his talk is 'Obama's Foreign Policy: Will 'Yes we can' overcome 'No we can't''

Stephen John Stedman is director of the Ford Dorsey Program in International Policy Studies at Stanford University, where he is also a senior fellow at the Centre for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) and Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), and professor of political science, by courtesy. An international expert on civil wars, mediation, and peacekeeping, his books include Ending Civil Wars: The Implementation of Peace Agreements (Boulder: Lynne Rienner, 2002), and Refugee Manipulation: War, Politics, and the Abuse of Human Suffering (Washington DC: Brookings Institution, 2009). From 2006 until 2009, he co-directed the Managing Global Insecurity Project, collaboration between Stanford, NYU and the Brookings Institution.

His most recent book, co-authored with Carlos Pascual of the Brookings Institution, and Bruce Jones of New York University, is Power and Responsibility: Creating International Order in an Era of Transnational Threats (Washington DC: Brookings Institution, 2009). His current research projects include using the concept of Responsible Sovereignty to develop a new grand strategy for American security and foreign policy; a study of how different governments and international organizations have tried to innovate organizationally to address new security challenges; and a study on the relevance and potential applicability of an IPCC-like body to the question of risks, safety and security of advances in biotechnology. In addition to his own research, Professor Stedman heads a faculty working group at Stanford on the geopolitics of Pakistan.
